Course Overview
This 8-hour curriculum provides an introduction to pistol-mounted optics for civilians transitioning from traditional iron sights. The course directly addresses the operational advantages and technical challenges inherent in deploying a red dot system for personal defense or everyday carry. We limit enrollment to provide individualized guidance.
Through systematic instruction and deliberate live-fire drills, you will overcome the initial learning curve. This training establishes the core proficiency, consistency, and confidence required to safely carry and operate your optic-equipped defensive firearm.
Who This Course Is For
This course is written for: Civilian shooters transitioning from iron sights. There are no additional prerequisites listed for this course.
Course Curriculum
- 01Basic Operation & Maintenance: Master the hardware, battery management, and care.
- 02Co-Witness Sights: Integrate your backup iron sights with the red dot.
- 03Down Optic Drills: Develop techniques if your dot fails.
- 04Accelerate Target Acquisition: Streamline sight picture recovery under stress.
- 05Maximize Accuracy: Improve precision placement during multi-target engagements.
- 06Maintain Situational Awareness: Leverage threat-focused scanning techniques.
Equipment List
- Pistol (functional/practical/preferably semiautomatic) .22 / 9mm/.40cal/.45ACP
- Try before you buy. For a rental fee and ammo, we can supply a .22 caliber Sig Sauer P322 or a Sig Sauer P365 cambered in 380 or 9mm.
- At least 3 pistol magazines (single stack pistols should have double)
- A proper belt affixed holster and magazine pouches that will retain equipment while moving. Participants will need a quality Kydex holster designed for either open hip carry or concealed carry.
- Magazine pouches
- Belt able to secure pistol in holster with ammo pouch
- 300 rounds of factory ammunition
- Notepad and pen/pencil
- Seasonally appropriate clothing suited for strenuous activity on gravel/dirt
- Ear protection (electronic preferred) / Eye protection
- Hydration and Lunch and Snacks
